How much do you know about Slots? They’re one of the most popular casino games out there, with hundreds of different variations for players to choose from.

Between their different themes, design elements and gameplay mechanics, there’s a lot to understand about the many slot games out there. Whether you’re looking to play a classic fruit machine or a modern slot game like Luck O’ The Irish Fortune Spins 2, understanding how they work is important.

Here are five key facts that every player should know before spinning the reels.

Random Number Generators Determine The Outcome Of Every Spin

All modern Slots operate using a random number generator (RNG), which ensures that each spin is completely independent and unpredictable. These algorithms work by generating thousands of random numbers per second, which are used to determine the outcome of a spin.

RNGs work toguarantee fairness, with no previous results having an impact on the outcome of a game. They also make it impossible for anyone to predict what matching combination – if any – will land on the reels.

Return To Player Is Worked Out Over A Long-Term

Listed on the information page of every online slot game is its return to player (RTP) percentage. This shows the theoretical amount that the gamewill return to players over an extended period.

But it is important to note that RTP is calculated over thousands or potentially even millions of future spins. So, while RTP is a good factor to check, it is no indicator of any short-term returns on a game.

Volatility Shows The Relative Risk Level Of A Game

Different Slots come with different levels of volatility, which influence how often and how much they pay out. There are three categories that slot games are classified into:

  •  Low Volatility – whichprovides more frequent but smaller payouts.
  • Medium Volatility – offering a balance between frequency and payout size.
  • High Volatility – with larger but less frequent payouts.

Understanding the volatility of a slot game helps players to choose one that matches their personal preferences.

Not All Slots Use Paylines

Traditional slot machines featured fixed paylines, where matching combinations had to appear in specific patterns along the central horizontal line of the reels. As Slots have evolved, many have included additional paylines as well as developed new systems.

Some games will offer an adjustable number of paylines, with potentially hundreds of different lines available. Others may use cluster mechanics, where combinations are counted when a certain number of matching symbols appear next to each other.

Responsible Play Is Important

But perhaps the most important thing to know about Slots is how to approach them responsibly. Many online casinos offer responsible gaming tools, including deposit limits, session reminders and self-exclusion options.

Understanding how Slots work helps players to decide which game is the right fit for their preferences. But between the classic three-reel games and more modern designs, there is a wide variety of Slots to suit any player.
