It’s the time of year again when there’s a big push on drinking, with the likes of Go Sober For October and Stoptober in full swing, albeit the latter mainly revolving around smoking.
As the nights draw in quicker, it can often be tempting to open up a bottle of wine and sit by far, and in this day and age, we should all be more conscious about how much we drink.
Alcoholism had risen at an alarming rate since the beginning of the pandemic, when many people turned to booze to cope with the stresses it caused, and a large number of people have come out of that with a problem.
October provides the perfect month to give it up, whether you feel you have a problem or not, and if you need to detox at home, there’s plenty of advice online to do so.
But why should you go sober for October? Well, here’s why:
It’s Bad for Your Health
Firstly, we’re going down the health route, and it’s the single most important reason to give up alcohol. Alcohol can be damaging in a number of ways, especially if you are a heavy drinker.

In its most extreme, you can suffer from liver disease, while alcohol can also lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes, and digestive problems, while cancer in the mouth, throat, liver, colon, and a number of other places see a heightened risk too.
Christmas is Coming
Christmas is a time of year that often sees a lot of heavy drinking, and while you should also be drinking responsibly, then a bit of a detox beforehand if you are looking to indulge could be a good idea.

While that doesn’t make binge drinking over Christmas acceptable, at least you do know you’ve had a good few months of looking after your body prior, beginning in October.
Do It for Charity
By giving up in October, you can raise money for charity, whether it be of your own accord or for Macmillan’s Go Sober For October campaign, so tell your friends and family and get them to sponsor you on your month without a drop of alcohol.
You could raise money for that or a charity of your choosing and give a little back on what could be a difficult challenge for you. Good luck!
